Panopto Dropboxes and Captioning (unrelated)

Dropbox and Focus Block.

Although the Panopto Dropbox system works well in that if you add a dropbox to a Panopto folder it creates a sub-folder in which all Viewers in the parent folder become Creators in the sub-folder, it does not provide students with a link in the Moodle Focus Block so they can download the recorder.  This means you have to direct students to the Panopto Media Library and they need to sign in there before seeing a download link. This isn’t exactly how we wanted to work but we can live with it.

I thought that perhaps if we reconfigured the Focus block and pointed it to the dropbox folder this would add a download link to it, but it doesn’t.  The only people who see a download link are tutors on the Moodle course when the block points to a dedicated course folder on Panopto.

I have added this to the Features Request forum at

I reported in a previous blog post that we had a recording captioned by a company called Ai-Media but that the Panopto Viewer did not allow us to search the captions.  I think this was simply caused by a backlog at Panopto in indexing the files because we are now able to search through the captions.  This is very useful indeed though how we can finance captioning is another matter.  Knowing that the technology works however is the first step, I imagine we will use it for selective high profile recordings and for recordings that need to be accessed by individuals we know have special needs.
