Just another Panopto Day

Social Interactions

I met with a science tutor and had an interesting chat about social constructivism and social interactions. His point was that he could not immediately see the use of Panopto because he did not want to ‘present’ any information and he thought there might not be any point in recording the interactions because once they had finished their purpose had passed.  Despite this, we did brainstorm some possible uses and if for no other reason he will use Panopto for recording student presentations. I must find time to think more about this.

Panopto Dropbox

I set this up today and now fully understand how it works and it appears to be an excellent tool and one that will allow the Youth Work group who will be using Panopto to record themselves practising presentations to use the Panopto recorder without us having to alter their Roles. It also allows them to download the recorder after they log in to the Viewer website. And an added bonus was that the dropbox allows the user to alter the sharing permissions on the recordings so they can share them if they wish.  Perfect!

Stream Fails to Load

I made the time to read through all the messages about this on the JISCMail forum. No solution but some hope.  It would seem as though this is connected with Silverlight.  The new editor (we all hope), which is due out later this month, will be Flash based and so this issue should disappear. In time, apparently, this Flash based editor will be replaced with an html5 one, but that’s longer term.

Uploading issue

We had another recording get stuck. It was on the same PC that this happened on before. I have asked IT services to investigate. I moved the files to my PC and uploaded from there without a hitch.

Mixed Views

Today I met a Psychology lecturer who uses Panopto who reports that his students love it and so does he and he is most anxious that the trial leads to us adopting Panopto permanently. Spoke to someone else who just does not want to be recorded. Spoke to someone else who reported that many staff here think this new technology somehow threatens their jobs.

And one final job before going home

There’s no one else to do it so I am going to record a staff research seminar on Black British Writing. The academic delivering this didn’t know yesterday whether she would use PowerPoint or Prezi. I don’t like Prezi for is accessibility issues but hope she does use it so I can see how it fairs in the Panopto Viewer.
